Tips and Suggestions for sharpening Jiffy® Pilot Point and Chipper Tooth Blades

Blade sharpening for the Jiffy® power ice drill is the primary item that requires service.  The pilot point and the chipper tooth blade can and should be resharpened as necessary for optimum ice cutting efficiency.

Contact your Jiffy® ice drill authorized service dealer for service and spare replaceable blades which are available for all Jiffy® power ice drills.  Replaceable chipper tooth blades are used only with units which were originally equipped with this type of blade from the factory.

The chipper tooth blade is fabricated from high carbon steel and is heat treated to provide a long lasting sharp edge.  The pilot point of the blade is hardened and ground to a sharp cutting edge.  To re-sharpen the pilot point use a 12 to 16 inch diameter disc grinder with No. 80 grit paper.  Follow the angle of the point, grinding the edge straight on both sides.  Be sure that centers are maintained as shown in Figure 1.  When too much is ground on one side, the blade point will be off center as shown in Figure 2.  Proper back clearance on the pilot point and the chipper tooth blade is essential as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 3.  Hold the drill  assembly upside-down in a vise.  Using a file and/or file with sandpaper, remove all burrs from the back of the chipper tooth blade and the pilot point.

Proper installation of a replacement chipper tooth blade is essential.  See Figure 4 for correct blade placement.

GENERAL TIPS:

• The Jiffy® ice drill chipper tooth cutting blades are razor sharp.  Use care when handling, removing or replacing blades or blade holder and when sharpening blades.  Carelessness can result in flesh cuts and injury.
• Keep the blade guard on at all times except while drilling ice.
• To extend blade life, wipe blades dry and apply a small amount of oil after use.  Do not bump ice blades onto the ice or other hard surfaces as blades could be damaged.
• The Jiffy® power ice drill is to be used ONLY for ice drilling.  It will be damaged when used for any other purpose.

New Sharpening Tips for A Set of Stealth Blades

The chipper tooth blade is fabricated from high carbon steel and is heat treated to provide a long lasting sharp edge.  The pilot point of the blade is hardened and ground to a sharp cutting edge.  To re-sharpen the pilot point use a 12 to 16 inch diameter disc grinder with Number 80 grit paper.  Proper back clearance is essential as shown in Figure 5.  Hold the stealth blade in a vise.  Using a file and/or file with sandpaper, remove all burrs from the back of the Stealth blade and the pilot point.
